Monarch butterfly (Danais Archippus) illustration from Sherman F. Denton's book "Moths and butterflies of the United States" (ca. 1900). Denton was known for a rather innovative method of creating illustrations of butterflies - he transferred actual butterflies' wings to paper with a process similar to thermal transfer. That's how illustrations for his book looked so real!
